My First Kancheevaram
The project focused on reimagining the traditional Kanchipuram (or Kanjeevaram) saree for modern millennials, aiming to rekindle a love for sarees among today’s youth. The saree, a classic Indian garment, is deeply rooted in tradition, particularly the Kanchipuram saree, known for its rich silk, vibrant colors, and intricate designs that have long represented South Indian heritage.
1 | Research
In recent years, however, sarees have been perceived as formal or traditional attire, with younger generations gravitating toward Western or fusion wear for its ease and contemporary appeal. My project sought to bridge this gap by adapting the elegance of the Kanchipuram saree to suit the tastes, lifestyles, and preferences of modern millennials.

2 | Creating Design Boards
I explored lighter fabrics, minimalistic motifs, and innovative color palettes, blending tradition with modern aesthetics to make the saree versatile, approachable, and relevant. By crafting designs that are timeless yet trend-conscious, I wanted to encourage millennials to embrace the saree as not only a symbol of cultural pride but also a stylish, versatile piece of modern wear.

3 | Creating Layouts and Specsheets
To make the Kanchipuram saree more appealing to millennials, I started by making rough sketches that combined classic and modern elements. I explored lighter, breathable fabrics, minimalist motifs, and innovative color palettes that reflect current trends while preserving the saree's elegance. Once I had a concept direction, I refined these designs, specsheets with color specifications and finalized the look for each saree, ensuring they balanced tradition with contemporary style.
